Two murder trials are set to begin Monday (Jan. 12) in Abbotsford, including one related to the double homicide of a senior couple in 2022.
Khushveer Toor, Gurkaran Singh and Abhijeet Singh of Surrey were each charged in December 2022 with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Arnold and Joanne De Jong.
Arnold, 77, and Joanne, 76, were found dead on the morning of May 9, 2022 in their home in the 33600 block of Arcadian Way, a rural road in east Abbotsford.
Police announced on Dec. 16, 2022 that charges had been laid against the three men. At the time, investigators said one of the three accused knew the De Jongs, although the circumstances were not clear.
The couple’s cause of death has not been released.
There have been numerous delays in the case getting to trial. At one point, Toor’s trial was scheduled to be held separately from his co-accused’s, but the trio are now being tried together.
The trial is scheduled for eight weeks in B.C. Supreme Court in Abbotsford.
Also scheduled to go to trial on Monday is Jagpreet Singh, charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Balwinder Kaur, 41, on March 15, 2024.
Police responded on that day to an assault in progress at a home in the 3400 block of Wagner Drive. Kaur was found with life-threatening stab wounds, and died in hospital.
Singh was arrested on the scene, and charges were announced the following day.
Singh’s trial is scheduled for six weeks, also in B.C. Supreme Court.
