US-backed regime change operations have repeatedly failed – Indian journalist

6/01/2026 | Russia Today

Between 1947 and 1989, Washington tried to topple more than 70 governments, noted author Ullekh NP has told RT

Regime change operations involving the US have repeatedly failed, the noted Indian journalist and writer has told RT amid reports that Washington is considering installing a transitional administration to run Venezuela.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to assume the role of interim president after US forces kidnapped Nicolas Maduro in Caracas on January 3 and flew him to New York to face criminal charges.

Edmundo Gonzalez, the runner-up in Venezuela’s 2024 election, may be tapped by the US to head a transitional government, according to media reports.

“We have seen across the world, not just in Latin America, but across the world, as to what had happened to those people living in countries that have seen regime change operations by the United States,” Ullekh NP, author of ‘Mad About Cuba,’ told RT.

He added that the US engineered as many as 70 regime changes between 1947 and 1989.

“You know, there is a joke that’s doing the rounds that if Americans promise democracy, you get the Taliban, which is what happened in Afghanistan,” he said, indicating the consequences of US regime-change operations.

Ullekh said the narrative built by the Western media is intended to make villains out of leaders like Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and Hugo Chavez.

“It’s a CIA playbook with the help of the mainstream media,” he added.

Venezuela’s leadership has repeatedly denied accusations that it is connected with the drug trade, arguing that the charges coming from the US only serve as a pretext for regime change.

US President Donald Trump has also issued veiled threats to the governments of Mexico, Colombia, and Cuba since the US Special Forces raid in which Maduro was abducted.

America’s action in Venezuela has evoked global condemnation, including from China, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa.
