Gender ministry seeks help to trace child seen drinking otombo in viral video

7/01/2026 | The Namibian

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare is seeking public assistance in locating a child suspected to be drinking a traditional brew known as otombo in a viral video.

The ministry on Tuesday raised concerns about possible child neglect and endangerment, calling on the public to help identify the child so that it can intervene and ensure her safety.

“In such cases, the Child Care and Protection Act requires that the best interests of the child guide all actions, including urgent steps to identify and reach the child where there is exposure to alcohol and possible neglect,” ministry spokesperson Cecilia Iyambo said.

Responding to comments on social media about exposing the child and not blurring her face, the ministry said blurring her face would prevent caregivers, community members and authorities from recognising her and providing the immediate protection and support she needs.

Iyambo reiterated the ministry’s commitment to protecting children from harm and respecting their dignity and privacy.

“We will continue to review our protocols to balance confidentiality with the need to intervene swiftly when children are placed at risk,” she said.

The ministry urged anyone with information to contact it on 081 376 7780 or via email at Genderequality@mgecw.gov.na, adding that public help could make a difference.
