The City of Chilliwack launched a one-year pilot project in 2025 to reduce the speed limit to 40 kilometres per hour in two key neighbourhoods.
The idea got approved in October with the aim of increasing road safety, and the pilot went ahead with new signage installed.
The two neighbourhoods included Garrison Crossing, to represent an area that already contains traffic-calming, while Fairfield was chosen as a pilot community to represent a community with wider roads that don’t generally include sidewalks nor traffic calming.
Speeds were reportedly typically higher on Fairfield than in Garrison.
Several cities such as Duncan, Nelson, Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, and Edmonton have already completed speed limit reduction pilot projects in their communities.
